Student investigations

Classroom activities

Choose an activity, change a variable, and explain what your evidence supports. You do not need an AI account or to send any AI requests.

Investigate energy and water

You’ll need: Introductory unit conversion; familiarity with models and variables.

You’ll produce: A completed source audit, hand calculation, and supported headline.

  1. Load the reference case. List the inputs, units and system boundary before calculating.
  2. Open Sources & method. Identify one reported value and one authored input. Explain why a bibliography alone cannot validate an exact number.
  3. Reproduce annual energy and carbon. Change only the grid to 700, then restore it to 390.
  4. Select the illustrative 10 mL water case. Change response sensitivity from Reference to Long. Explain which outputs change and why water does not.
  5. List three exclusions. Identify watershed, season and consumption/withdrawal information needed before interpreting water volume.
  6. Write a defensible headline and a headline that overstates the evidence. Export a report with its sources.

Exit ticket: Would these results justify saying “all AI requests use this much water”? Explain.

The worksheet downloads as an HTML file. Open it in a browser to work offline or print it.

Current investigation: 25 text requests/day at 390 gCO₂e/kWh. Your inputs remain unchanged until you load the reference case.

Three questions to keep asking

What is counted?

Identify the unit, product or system, time period and exclusions.

Where did it come from?

Follow the exact value to a source or identify it as an authored assumption.

What can I conclude?

Explain what follows from the evidence and what still depends on missing information or priorities.
